AKHRA IN RANCHI

6th November 2022

Program
Adivasi poetic storytelling is an expression of the lyrical and cultural ancestral world woven from history, wisdom and the natural environment. This tradition of poetic storytelling and performance is heard and visible orally and visually with words, sound, music, rhythm, gesture, spatial, spiritual elements. How and to what extent is this feature being expressed in contemporary Adivasi-Indigenous poetry? Is the narrative of contemporary Adivasi poetry only an anthem of suffering, deprivation, oppression and struggle? Are they just a politico-economic statement or are their skies grounded in the historical land that has been woven for a world of peaceful coexistence after thousands of years of ancestral experiences? With these curiosities, Adivasi-Indigenous Poetic Storytelling is being organized in Ranchi on 6 November 2022. In this event, 17 young and senior poets of 11 Adivasi and indigenous languages of Jharkhand will recite their poems and 3 intense Adivasi critics will make open discussion meaningful.

About the Organisation
Jharkhandi Bhasha Sahitya Sanskriti Akhra (JBSS AKHRA) is a non-registered community organization that works for conservation and development of traditional knowledge, oral languages, literature, wisdom of the native and Adivasis of Jharkhand state. This organization advocates Adivasidom for self-determination and self-governance of the various languages and communities of Jharkhand and the restoration of rights on natural resources. This community organization was conceived in November 2003 and formally it was formed by a National Convention organized on 11-12 February 2006. JBSS Akhra intervenes on the issue of oral language and literature, traditional knowledge and wisdom and rights of water, forest and land through its various regional committees. Due to the cultural movement of Akhra, in 2011, the Jharkhand government had given the status of second state official language to the tribal and regional languages of the state. A quarterly magazine has been published regularly by the organization since 2004, in which literature is published in 14 Adivasi and regional languages, which is the only magazine of India of its kind. Akhra also started Asur Radio to preserve and popularize the threatened Asur language from 2020.  In addition to this, the various documentaries on the issue of language, culture, history and forest and land rights in different Adivasi and regional languages have been produced. Its campaigns run on social media have played an effective role in educating all Adivasi communities of India to be aware and organized.
