Developing an Inclusive Tamil Indie Music Scene Using a Protest Band:
A Masterclass with Tenma

The Tamil indie scene has always been a volatile and fragmented ecosystem. Despite great talent and popular songs, it has only recently become a sustainable practice. This masterclass involved a deep dive into ways in which we built resilience in the last five years to create the industry, and consideration of how we built the social capital and respect of the art and artists with the Casteless Collective.

The Casteless Collective is an Indian indie band based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The band was formed in 2017, with support from the Neelam Panpaatu Maiyam started by filmmaker Pa. Ranjith and filmmaker and film composer Tenma, founder of the label Madras Records.

Children’s Therukoothu Workshop with the Purisai Therukoothu Troupe

Therukootu is the traditional art form of folk theatre of Tamil Nadu with a long history. The dynamic art form combines spoken word, song, and dance. Its themes are drawn from Indian mythologies and epics, particularly from the Mahabharatha and the Ramayana. The children’s workshop served as an introduction of the artform for the young generation and to encourage them to learn and enjoy Therukoothu.

A Concert by Tenma

Tenma is an Artist, Composer and Curator based out of Chennai, India. He is best known for his contribution to the city’s independent music scene. With an educational background in visual communication from Loyola College (2008) and a Masters Diploma in Music Production from Point Blank, London (2011), he has been deeply invested in the uplifting and development of artists from the lower cadres of society in particular. He has co-founded two iconic bands that revolutionized the music scene – The Casteless Collective with film director Pa. Ranjith, and the Tamil rock band, Kurangan. Simultaneously, he built two important platforms for indie artists – the Madras Indie Collective, a platform for local artists to present themselves, and Madras Medai, a music festival which celebrates equality through music. As a music composer, Tenma’s tryst with the Tamil Film industry started in 2019, with his first album receiving critical acclaim for the film Irandam Ulagaporin Kadaisi Gundu. Tenma has since composed music for various films and indie projects. His recently released film “Natchathiram Nagargiradu ” was critically acclaimed for its unique sound design as well as the brilliant use of the theatrical idiom. He performed for CADALFEST with a musical concert.
