The World of Therukoothu: An Introduction
Masterclass #2 with the Purisai Therukoothu Troupe

Therukootu is the traditional art form of folk theatre of Tamil Nadu with a long history. The dynamic art form combines spoken word, song, and dance. Its themes are drawn from Indian mythologies and epics, particularly from the Mahabharatha and the Ramayana. Therukoothu Masterclass #1 served as an introduction to the basics of the artform. It covered the Adavus (steps), singing, and singing and dancing together. Therukoothu Masterclass #2 discussed the performance and the challenge faced by this ancient artform in today’s world. The two masterclasses are best taken together, before and after the performance on the 19th December.

Meet Indianostrum: A screening of Janani’s Juliet
and a conversation between Pankaj Rishi Kumar and Koumarane Valavane,
moderated by Judith Misrahi-Barak

Followed by a discussion between Koumarane Valavane who created the play Chandala, the Impure at Indianostrum, and Pankaj Rishi Kumar who directed the 50-minute documentary on the creation of the play.


12:30-14:30
Refounding Dalit Aesthetics through visual and Performing Arts:  Jyoti Nisha, Lakshman KP, Mohit Kaycee (Jangama Collective), Tenma, and Pa. Ranjith (TBC)  in conversation
with Dickens Leonard and Manju Edachira

This final event emphasised the Magizhchi perspective of CADALFEST, and involved discussions as well a few short film clips and trailers.
